ADHD – 2,000,000 School-Age Children Affected!

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009
by Richard H Ealom

INTRODUCTION: ADHD is a common behavioral condition that affects an estimated 8 to 10 percent of school-age children and is short for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It is a medical condition that affects how well a person can sit still, focus, and pay attention and used to be called attention deficit disorder, or ADD.

ADHD has no known cure, but it can be successfully controlled. This condition is not caused by poor parenting, excessive sugar, or vaccines, But has biological origins that are not as yet clearly understood.

SYMPTOMS: Appear over a period of many months, and include Impulsiveness ( a child who acts quickly without thinking first) and also include excessive worrying, fear, or panic, which can lead to physical symptoms such as a speeding heart, sweating, stomach pains, and diarrhea.

Such symptoms often get better as children grow older and learn to adjust, But although some may “grow out of” their symptoms, more than half of all kids who have the disorder will continue to show signs of the condition as young adults. The good news is, with proper treatment, children can learn to successfully live with and manage their symptoms.

TEST: Because there’s no test that can determine the presence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, a diagnosis depends on a total and complete evaluation. Your child’s physician may also perform a physical exam as well as tests to check hearing and vision so other medical problems can be ruled out. A definite diagnosis is hard because there are no tests that consistently detect this disorder.

Very few parents are surprised when the results of a physician administered Attention Deficit Disorder test come back with a positive diagnosis of their child having the Disorder. They already suspect a hyperactivity or attentional problem or they would not be in the doctor’s office asking for an ADHD test in the first place. The biggest problem with such a test is that diagnosis is purely subjective and often depends on the tolerance of the observer.

TREATMENT: Effective treatments for ADHD are available, and include behavioral therapy and drugs. Ultimately, the primary care physician gathers the information, makes the diagnosis, and starts treatment. Some treatments work better than others at addressing specific combinations of symptoms. Any good treatment plan will require close follow-up and monitoring, and your child’s physician may make adjustments along the way. When devising the correct treatment for your child, the physician might try various medications in various amounts, especially if your child is being treated for ADHD along with another disorder. Your child’s physician may recommend additional treatments and interventions depending on your child’s symptoms and needs.

A number of alternative therapies are promoted and used by parents including: megavitamins, body treatments, diet manipulation, allergy treatment, chiropractic treatment, attention and visual training, and traditional one-on-one “talking” psychotherapy, But scientific research has not found them to be effective, and the majority of these treatments have not been studied carefully, if at all.

Anti-depressants are sometimes a treatment choice; However, in 2004 the FDA issued a warning that these medicines may lead to a rare increased risk of suicide in children and teens. Since it’s important for parents to actively participate in their child’s treatment plan, parental education is also considered an important part of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder management. For specific medical advice, diagnoses, and treatment, see your physician.

CONCLUSION: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a real illness that begins in childhood, is more commonly found in boys than girls, and it affects 8-10 percent of school-age children in the US. It must be diagnosed by a MD who specializes in these types of conditions in cooperation with parents and teachers.

Teachers should develop abbreviated assignments or provide extended time for children with ADHD. Although it can often be challenging to raise kids with this condition, it’s important to remember they aren’t “bad,” “acting out,” or “being difficult” on purpose. For more information about ADHD and Adult ADD, contact your doctor or other health care professional.

Head Lice – Lousy Little Parasitic Insects!

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009
by Richard H Ealom

INTRODUCTION: Head lice (Pediculus capitis) are tiny parasitic insects well adapted to living mostly on the scalp and neck hairs of human host. These are mainly gotten by direct head-to-head contact with an infested person’s hair, but may on rare occasions be transferred with shared combs, hats and other hair accessories.

They get their nutrition by blood-feeding once or twice each day, and cannot survive for more than one day or so at room temperature without immediate access to human blood. These parasites can live up to 30 days on a human holding on to hair with hook-like claws found at the end of each of their 6 legs. They are rarely found on the body, eyelashes, or eyebrows and rarely (if ever) cause direct harm, or transmit infectious agents from one person to another. Head lice are equal opportunity parasites that do not respect socio-economic class distinctions and can infest persons of all ages, but children are more likely to become infested because of their habit of playing in close proximity, sharing hats, headphones, combs and brushes, sleeping bags, stuffed animals, and clothing.

NITS: Head lice eggs are called nits and are laid by the adult female at the base of the hair shaft closest the scalp and look sort of like dandruff, only they can’t be gotten rid of by brushing or shaking them off. The eggs hatch about 7 to 11 days after they are laid. Eggs further than 1/4 inch away from the scalp have probably already hatched. Nits are most effectively gotten rid of by combing the hair with a specially designed nit comb. The eggs can be distinguished from dandruff flakes as they are very adherent to the hair shaft, whereas dandruff can be easily moved along the hair shaft.

INFESTATION: Contact with an already infested person is the most usual way to acquire head lice. Less frequently, Wearing clothing, such as hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms, or hair ribbons, recently worn by an infested person. There are four crucial steps to controlling an infestation: the use of an effective head louse medication; nit removal from the head (combing); removal of lice and nits from the household environment by vacuuming, washing, or freezing objects suspected of infestation; and daily head inspections and nit removal until infestation is gone, followed by weekly head checks to detect re-infestation. The physician should be able to inform you if your child is infested with lice and needs to be treated.

TREATMENT: Treatment should be considered ONLY when active lice or viable eggs are found. A treatment can create significant side effects in children younger than six months old, the elderly, and any person weighing less than 110 lbs (50 kg), especially when it is used repeatedly over a short period of time. If your child is 2 years old or less, you should not use medicated treatments. Your child’s physician may recommend repeating treatment in 7 to 10 days to make sure all the nits have been killed and to avoid any chance of reinfestation. Treatments can be over-the-counter or prescription medications, depending on what has already been tried. It isn’t rare for treatments to be unsuccessful because of incorrect use or because the lice may be resistant to the chemical in the shampoo. Following the directions on the product label is also important to ensure that the it works correctly.

Medicated shampoos can usually kill the lice and nits, but it may take a few days for the itching to go away. Some don’ts include: Don’t use a hair dryer on your child’s hair after using any of the currently available scalp shampoos, because some have flammable ingredients. Don’t wash your child’s hair for 1 to 2 days after applying a medicated shampoo. Be patient and follow the protocol and preventative tips as directed by your child’s physician for keeping the bugs at bay, and you’ll be well down the road to keeping your family lice-free.

If you feel like you’re following every recommendation and your child still has lice, it may be because of one or more of the following: there are still some nits left behind, your child is still being exposed to someone with lice, the shampoo you’re using isn’t effective. If your child still has lice for 2 weeks after you started treatment or if your child’s scalp looks infected (with pus or sores), call your child’s doctor. Vacuuming the carpets, upholstery, and car seats will take care of any lice that fell off before treatment.

CONCLUSION: Head lice infect hair on the head and are more common in close, overcrowded living conditions. Infestation causes intense itching, but does not lead to a serious medical problem. They can be spread when infested hair brushes or combs are shared or when infested bedding, towels or shower caps are shared. Head lice is an increasing problem because lice-killing medicines are becoming less effective. Each year, between 6 and 12 million people worldwide become infested. Children ages 3-11 and their families become infested most often. Pets are of no significance in transmitting human lice, and should not be treated.

In one study, the estimated yearly cost of infestations in the USA was nearly $1 billion dollars. Girls get head lice more often than boys; women more frequently than men. Anyone can become infested and the presence of head lice is not the result of poor habits. Although it can be challenging to eliminate, you must be steadfast and persistent when dealing with an infestation.

Tone Abdominal Muscles With Proper Dieting

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009
by Frank Powell

Toning ab muscles is probably a very hot subject among adults and even among younger individuals. In order to tone those stubborn muscles in your abdominal area, you must exercise consistently and you need to keep your body fats low enough. You need to perform exercises that are meant to tone the abs and you must do it without fail.

Many people feel the shame of having a huge belly gut, while others are blessed to have nice flat abs with no effort on their part. If you have that huge belly that we all dread, then you currently have a layer of fat surrounding your ab muscles. This layer of fat will hinder your ab muscles from showing. In order to solve this, you need to pay close attention to your dieting so that you can get rid of the fat surrounding your ab muscles. 25% of your effort should be focused on exercising your ab muscles, while 75% should be focused on eating and dieting properly.

The diet plays a very large role in the developing of your ab muscles. But since there are so many diet plans out there, you have to be careful that you pick the right plan that works best for you. The overall secret is to structure an eating plan that will help you decrease your body fat and cut down your calorie intake. If your body does not get the amount of calories that it needs from the foods you eat, then some of the fat stored in your stomach region will be used for energy. If you make an attempt to eat right, then you can definitely get rid of those unwanted fats.

If you are not 100% sure on what foods you need to eat, you should seek advice from your doctor or a nutritionist so that they can tell you what dietary meal plans will work best for you. Also, there are certain foods that provide fewer calories. Make an effort to learn about these foods so that you can add them to your meal plan. You want to get rid of those calorie pounding foods that do nothing but add more and more weight to your body. This is why you need to change your eating habits if you expect to burn the fat.

In order to tone up your ab muscles, it is imperative that you focus on abdominal exercises. The most general and basic ab exercise is the abdominal crunch, which is a really effective exercise for strengthening the abs. A lot of people also do ab crunches on an exercise ball in order to help them workout their abdominal muscles properly. There are a bunch of videos online that will help you to do ab exercises on the exercise ball. You can watch these videos for free on sites like youtube. Other effective ab exercises that you can do are leg lifts, jackknife sit ups, and v-ups.

Remember that abdominal muscles are quite stubborn. You need to be patient since results cant be seen immediately. By being consistent with your exercises and of course, your diet, you will be able to tone those ab muscles in a matter of months. Once youre removed the stomach bulges, you must continue with the exercises so that you can start toning your muscles.

Fade Stretch Marks: Making It Happen

Saturday, June 20th, 2009
by Sapphire Rylee

Is there a method to fade stretch marks? A resounding yes! Make stretch marks disappear? Unfortunately this is still a no. Despite the many advances in skin care technology, no treatment has yet successfully made these often than not embarrassing stripes totally disappear. However, there are now many available treatments to make stretch marks appear less conspicuous and ease associated signs (such as skin dryness) that may arise with having these marks.

Basic Facts About Your Skin and Stretch Marks

Causes

The human skin is the largest as well as the most elastic organ. It can spring back to its original state. However, there are instances when the skin becomes too overstretched damaging the epidermis. The epidermal layer is responsible for secreting collagen and elastic fibers, two substances that are give skin its elasticity. Below are common causes of stretch marks:

- Abrupt Changes in Weight – When one rapidly gains weight, the skin is not given adequate time to adjust to the added mass, thus, the skin becomes overstretched. These stretch marks become more evident when one then loses the weight as they now have more texture. – Pregnancy. Common sense tells us that stretch marks occur in the abdominal region as the body accommodates the growing child. – Growth spurts. Puberty may cause certain individuals to experience rapid growth in height and muscles. – Bulking of muscles. Stretch marks associated with athletes in particular bodybuilders.

Appearance

- Color of the Marks – Initially stretch marks are seen as red to pinkish to purple in color that eventually become a more permanent silvery-white – Shape – crooked bands or lines or stripes that vary in length and width appearing mostly as wavelike streaks – Texture – can be flat, depressed, ridged/bumpy, or glossy

Associated Symptoms

- Dryness – Itchiness – Thickening or raised skin – Pain – Tenderness

Common Location for Stretch Marks

In general, stretch marks are seen in areas of the body where weight gain is most evident namely:

- Abdomen – Thighs – Hips – Breast – Upper arms and axillary area

Treatment for Stretch Marks

Cosmetic Intervention

- Laser therapy and skin peeling – These type of treatment is done by removing the scarred topmost layer of the skin allowing newer and healthier skin to emerge using laser or chemicals that are acidic in nature – Microdermabrasion – exfoliates the topmost layer of the skin using very small crystals – Skin removal – usually done to those people who have loss dramatic weight resulting to excess skin Nonsurgical Intervention – Topical medications – include lotions and creams that are massaged into the skin. Most of these topical creams share similar ingredients such as vitamins A and E. Tretinoin-based cream is said to be effective in fading stretch creams. Keep in mind that since topical medications are not as aggressive as surgical ones more time is required for results to show. An added perk to topical treatments is the alleviation of other symptoms (such as creams give added moisture to dry skin). – Lifestyle Change – healthy and clean living is recommended to keep one’s weight stable and in check. A balanced diet will provide one sufficient nutrients essential for healthy skin.

Become Thin Using Hoodia

Thursday, June 18th, 2009
by Nicole Barry

The discovery of Hoodia might just well be the exception to this. Merchandisers all over the world have started using this ‘magic’ plant in the composition of natural Hoodia weight loss products. However, do you know what this mysterious plant is and why weight loss treatments based on it are in so much demand?

It is called Hoodia Gordonii and is found in the deserts of South Africa. This wonder plant has caused a stir and is greatly sought after.

Before being released for general use it was tested on people just to see how effective it was and whether there would be any side-effects. One of the examples of it’s effectiveness was quite astounding as it consisted of a number of BBC workers who volunteered to eat just a single Hoodia leaf.

One doesn’t need to worry about the adverse effects common to other weight loss products such as an abnormal heartbeat or digestive problems. Another benefit of using products containing extracts of this plant, is that users claim they do not feel tired even though they are not eating, as it provides a normal energy levels for the entire day.

The purpose of the Hoodia weight loss pill is not to starve yourself but to control unnatural and unnecessary food cravings. If you experience problems controlling your hunger then using Hoodia weight loss pills are probably the only way to help your problem.

This explains the high production costs. In many areas where a product is expensive, unauthentic Hoodia weight loss pills and other supplements allegedly containing the plant, are readily available on the internet. Buying cheap Hoodia extracts is not only false economy as you cannot produce this product cheaply, but you do not actually know what is being used as the substitute.

How To Find Quality Fish Oil Supplements

Sunday, June 14th, 2009
by Freddie Logan

The many health benefits that come from taking fish oil supplements are well known today, but many people do not realize that there is a purity issue when it comes to this substance. The main concern is mercury contamination, but there are other things to consider as well.

Where the fish you consume comes from is something to think about, whether you are taking oil supplements or just eating fresh fish a few times a week. You may assume fish are just fish, but this is not the case.[youtube:UJlw4f_OKyI;What Are The [link:Benefits Of Fish Oil];http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJlw4f_OKyI&feature=related]

Fish farms are now being used to get cheaper sources of fish both for fresh consumption and supplement purposes. This is surprising to many people who think that all fish just come straight from the ocean. So, what is the big deal? It has been discovered after testing that fish from these farms have more impurities than fish coming fresh from the ocean.

Different types of fish naturally contain different amounts of mercury and other toxins. This means that the exact type of fish used for your supplement does matter. For example, many people who eat fresh fish will go for salmon over tuna because tuna is known to have higher mercury counts.

While it is not as easy to find and may cost a little more, cod liver oil is one of the best options you can purchase. If purchased as a pure liquid it is even better.

Purity is very important! It is not necessarily true that a supplement not labeled specifically as 100% pure is bad, but you do want to do some research into different brands to ensure you purchase one that is reasonably pure. Chances are the cheapest brands at the supermarket are not going to be your most pure options.

Most people end up taking large capsules that are hard to swallow, but this is not the only option. Liquid form fish oil tends to be more pure, though it doesn’t have the most appetizing taste ever. If you really want to ensure you get all of the health benefits possible, go for 100% pure cod liver oil liquid.

If you are concerned about the taste of a liquid form or want to get your children to take it without a fight, consider mixing it into smoothies or milkshakes. Children will not even know it is in there! You can take frozen fruit and juice and add it into the blender for a very simple smoothie that is healthy for everyone.

Most people do not eat fish three or four times a week, which means most do not get the fish oil they need from their diet. There are considerable mental and physical benefits that have been proven to come with taking fish oil supplements on a daily basis. This includes children!

Arm Tone – With The Mind

Sunday, June 14th, 2009
by Katherine Crawford M.S.

It took a lot of trial and error to figure out how to get arm tone and as a result, flabby arms were the thorn in my side for a very long time. I was extremely frustrated and resorted to hiding behind kimono-style tops all the time.

Why? Because my levels of motivation were in a constant flux. No matter what I did, I could not maintain a lasting amount of motivation.

At times I would feel so unmotivated that I would simply ditch the whole effort all together. How did I pat myself on the back? With cookies galore!

One day I had a wake-up call and realized that if I couldn’t figure out a way to stick with a program for the long run, I would never be able to get sexy arms. And I also knew that this motivational “yo yoing” wasn’t sustainable.

So I searched high and low for a method that would allow me to stay motivated indefinitely. And I’m happy to say that I found said method. It was created by David Burns M.D. In my opinion it’s the best thought modification system out there. Central to his method is the elimination of cognitive (thought) distortions.

So without further delay, here are 3 cognitive distortions you need to avoid that you don’t fall of the arm tone bandwagon:

1. Black and white distortions. If you are a perfectionist, you most likely suffer from these distortions. If you have to do something perfectly or not at all, then you see things as black and white. Ironically, if you ignore perfectionism and lower your standards you’ll get better results.

2. Over-generalizing distortions. Just because you haven’t been successful today doesn’t mean you can’t be successful tomorrow. You simply haven’t found the right approach. Yet with this distortion, you assume that your past failures will keep on being your future failures. The key here is to keep on trying new things with a fresh outlook.

3. Mental-filters distortions. This one his horrible because it forces you to focus on the negative instead of the positive. If you have a solid day of healthy eating, but slightly veer off and have a small amount of junk food you only focus on the junk food. But what about all the other healthy food you ate? Always give yourself credit for the positive.

Avoiding the above distortions will seriously help you achieve lasting motivation when trying to get arm tone. And lasting motivation is the key to sexy arm stardom. So make sure you act on this information now and not later!
