Wednesday, January 6th, 2010The Problems With Hoodia Gordonii – the “Miracle Weight Loss Supplement”
Saturday, December 12th, 2009Hoodia Gordonii is one of the new weight loss fads that has been sweeping the nation lately. Some question if it really works, but that is the least of hoodia’s worries. It’s been proven time and time again through biochemical theory, lab controlled studies, anecdotal reports, and the fact that the San Bushman, the original users of hoodia, have already been using the plant for centuries that this plant does, indeed, work to reduce appetite.
However, a problem arises: The authenticity of the hoodia you are buying. Since hoodia is quite rare – the only known place to get the correct species of the plant is in the Kalahari Desert – and is in high demand, sellers are coming up with sneaky ways to trick customers into thinking that they actually get authentic hoodia.
The problem is it is quite difficult to tell who is selling genuine hoodia. Although a CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) certificate is required for a seller to sell hoodia, this does not mean that their hoodia is authentic, and buyers have no way of telling if their hoodia is authentic until they find out that it doesn’t work. Mike Adams at newstarget.com believes that up to 80% of hoodia sold is counterfeit.
In addition to that, he notes that many sellers can photoshop a competitor’s CITES, simply counterfeit a CITES, or send in a real batch of hoodia in order to get an authentic CITES and then sell customers fake hoodia. You can get more information about the authenticity of hoodia by going to newstarget.com and doing a search for “hoodia”. My advice, however, is to look for anecdotal reports of hoodia suppliers on the internet. You can do this by looking at the reviews of certain products on websites like amazon.com or by simply doing a search for “hoodia experience” in a search engine and looking for message boards/forums with people who have already tried certain hoodia products.
Well now, it’s fine and dandy that hoodia, assuming you find an authentic product, can reduce your appetite, but is that really that helpful? Among the people informed about weight loss (we actually call it “fat loss,” not “weight loss”), it’s known that simply starving yourself won’t accomplish your goals, which is what hoodia would do.
You must increase your calorie expenditure by doing some sort of aerobics in addition to increasing your muscle mass by incorporating weight lifting to actually achieve your goals and keep them. Hoodia may be slightly useful in causing an additional calorie deficit since about half of the calorie deficit you obtain should be through decreased calories and the other half through increased physical activity.
In contrast, however, you can easily control your appetite by drinking water or eating foods with a high satiety and a low amount of calories. A stomach full of gelatin has fewer calories than a stomach full of peanut butter.

Hoodia Gordonii: Scam Or Weight Loss Phenomenon?
Friday, November 20th, 2009You’ve probably seen it around in the supermarkets, on TV, or just heard about it from a friend. Hoodia gordonii is supposed to be one of the next big products in the weight loss industry, or is it? Hoodia claims to be able to curb your appetite by being able to mimic the effects that food has on your hypothalamus – therefore, making you feel full. Hoodia has a special compound in it known as P57 that mimics the effects of glucose on the nerve cells in the brain therefore reducing appetite.
Hoodia gordonii is a plant resembling a cactus found in the Kalahari Desert in Africa. The San Bushmen living within this desert have used Hoodia for thousands of years in order to prevent themselves from becoming hungry during long hunting expeditions. It has been anecdotally reported that they can curb their appetites for about a period of 24 hours by chewing on hoodia.
In sometime around the middle of 2004, the media began to delve into hoodia. It mostly started when a correspondent to CBS known as Lesley Stahl actually went to the Kalahari Desert to find an authentic version of this special plant. According to the story on the CBS website, Stahl reports that “She had no after effects – no funny taste in her mouth, no queasy stomach, and no racing heart. She also wasn’t hungry all day, even when she would normally have a pang around mealtime. And, she also had no desire to eat or drink the entire day. ‘I’d have to say it did work,’ says Stahl.”
In a paper titled “Increased ATP content/production in the hypothalamus may be a signal for energy-sensing of satiety: studies of the anorectic mechanism of a plant steroidal glycoside,” the authors of the paper found that in the animals tested, injected P57 (the active compound in hoodia) reduced subsequent 24 hour food intake by about 40-60%.
In addition to this, at Phytopharm’s website (Phytopharm is the original developer of the hoodia product) Phytopharm states, “In 2001 Phytopharm completed a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study in overweight, but otherwise healthy volunteers using an extract of Hoodia gordonii. The large doses of extract caused a statistically significant reduction in the average daily calorie intake. In addition, a statistically significant reduction in body fat content was also observed compared to the placebo group after two weeks.”
So, it’s quite clear that from the fact that the San Bushman have been using Hoodia for centuries, an anecdotal report from Lesley Stahl that says that hoodia curbed her appetite, a scientifically controlled study done with P57 in animals, and a statement form Phytopharm that hoodia really does work to reduce appetite.
However, another problem arises: The authenticity of hoodia. Since hoodia is very rare – the only known place to get the correct species of the plant is in the Kalahari Desert – and is in high demand, sellers are coming up with sneaky ways to trick customers into thinking that they actually get hoodia. Thursday, October 8th, 2009Tone Abdominal Muscles With Proper Dieting
Wednesday, June 24th, 2009Toning ab muscles is probably a very hot subject among adults and even among younger individuals. In order to tone those stubborn muscles in your abdominal area, you must exercise consistently and you need to keep your body fats low enough. You need to perform exercises that are meant to tone the abs and you must do it without fail.
Many people feel the shame of having a huge belly gut, while others are blessed to have nice flat abs with no effort on their part. If you have that huge belly that we all dread, then you currently have a layer of fat surrounding your ab muscles. This layer of fat will hinder your ab muscles from showing. In order to solve this, you need to pay close attention to your dieting so that you can get rid of the fat surrounding your ab muscles. 25% of your effort should be focused on exercising your ab muscles, while 75% should be focused on eating and dieting properly.
The diet plays a very large role in the developing of your ab muscles. But since there are so many diet plans out there, you have to be careful that you pick the right plan that works best for you. The overall secret is to structure an eating plan that will help you decrease your body fat and cut down your calorie intake. If your body does not get the amount of calories that it needs from the foods you eat, then some of the fat stored in your stomach region will be used for energy. If you make an attempt to eat right, then you can definitely get rid of those unwanted fats.
If you are not 100% sure on what foods you need to eat, you should seek advice from your doctor or a nutritionist so that they can tell you what dietary meal plans will work best for you. Also, there are certain foods that provide fewer calories. Make an effort to learn about these foods so that you can add them to your meal plan. You want to get rid of those calorie pounding foods that do nothing but add more and more weight to your body. This is why you need to change your eating habits if you expect to burn the fat.
In order to tone up your ab muscles, it is imperative that you focus on abdominal exercises. The most general and basic ab exercise is the abdominal crunch, which is a really effective exercise for strengthening the abs. A lot of people also do ab crunches on an exercise ball in order to help them workout their abdominal muscles properly. There are a bunch of videos online that will help you to do ab exercises on the exercise ball. You can watch these videos for free on sites like youtube. Other effective ab exercises that you can do are leg lifts, jackknife sit ups, and v-ups.
Remember that abdominal muscles are quite stubborn. You need to be patient since results cant be seen immediately. By being consistent with your exercises and of course, your diet, you will be able to tone those ab muscles in a matter of months. Once youre removed the stomach bulges, you must continue with the exercises so that you can start toning your muscles.

Surgery of the Knee: Cartilage Restoration – Osteochondral Allograft, Microfracture, OATS, and ACI
Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009Treatments of biologic origin are best when treating knee disease or injury. This type of treatment can restore the knee to a near-normal state. Reconstruction of the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), meniscal repair, and anatomic knee fracture repair are three kinds of biological surgical repairs that have good success with knee injuries.
A symptomatic full-thickness chondral lesion of the knee presents a problematic management issue for patients and orthopedists.
Injury that leads to articular cartilage cell death is well treated by restoration of the surface cells of the joint. The shiny white surface that composes all the joints in the body is the articular cartilage or surface cell layer of the joint.
This kind of tissue damage can be treated in four ways: Osteochondral Allograft, Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI), Osteoarticular transfer system (OATS), and Microfracture.
Click here for more on Arthroscopy of the Knee.
If the patient is young, a small lesion can be repaired with Microfracture surgery. When using this method, a pick-like tool will be used to enter the marrow of the knee multiple times under the chondral defect. These entries will stimulate the bone marrow. This causes repair tissue to be created. The repair tissue fills the chondral defect with fibrous cartilage tissue.
In this scenario, the patient will be on crutches for a month to eight weeks. The patient must not participate in sports for a six months to year. Additionally, the patient must realize that it may take up to eighteen months to be completely pain free.
The knee surface may be restored to a near-normal condition using a procedure called autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI). If the knee defect is large, this procedure is used.
Articular cartilage cells harvested from the healthy part of the injured knee are used in ACI. This surgery may be used under very specific conditions.
The patient must have a full-thickness, weight-bearing, symptomatic chondral injury to the femoral articular surface. Additionally, the patient must be physiologically young. Furthermore, the patient must agree to an 18 month rehabilitation process.
Surgery to the tibia and patella may not be successful. For this reason, insurance companies often refuse payment for surgery of this type. ACI is not a workable procedure for treating osteoarthritis. This is a condition in which two reciprocal joint surfaces are damaged. X-rays show narrowing of the joint space, as well as bone spurs. The use of a 3T MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) can assess for ACI. This procedure can help determine the proper treatment.
